As part of its continuous development and innovation, SXEW Hellenic Cuprum plans to establish a copper scrap recycling unit at the Apliki site.
This activity will rely on the pioneering hydrometallurgical methods already developed by the company’s technical team, utilizing processes of leaching, copper solution purification, and electrowinning — without smelting (solvent extraction), without high energy consumption, and without CO₂ emissions.
The scrap will come from pure copper or high-copper alloys (e.g., cables, pipes), free from foreign materials such as plastics.
The ultra-pure, shredded scrap will be fed into a dissolution setup, aiming to solubilize/extract the copper — that is, to transfer it from the solid to the liquid phase and create a clean pregnant leach solution (PLS).
This solution can be combined with PLS derived from the hydrometallurgical processing of ore, enhancing the capacity, competitiveness, and sustainability of the overall production activity.
The planned process will be fully closed-loop, as with all hydrometallurgical circuits, ensuring the recycling of all solutions and the protection of the environment.
This planned activity is part of the company’s strategy for sustainable development and circular economy, fully aligned with the new European legislation on Critical Raw Materials (CRMs).
